The apartment is generated by the union of three units at the first floor of an old building, not far from the Bocconi school. The starting and comparison point was a disordered system of rooms, generated by the unplanned aggregation of different building particles, in direct communication with the adjacent balcony and street. The renovation project envisages the reorganization of the interior spaces, rendering continuity to a system of spaces resulting from a progressive and unregulated aggregation. From a careful analysis of the existing rooms and their relationship with the external context, we have developed in collaboration with the Clients a radical plant characterized by a clear separation between the areas of the apartament: day, night and services.
The new scheme proposes, in a different and not calculated way, the perimeter of the original building particles, giving each of them a well-defined function. The steps necessary to achieve this configuration were the demolition of the existing brick partitions, the structural consolidation of the floors, the reorganization of the systems. The living area, freed from the wall partitions, is proposed as a large open space in direct communication with the external balcony. The heart of this space is the new kitchen that embraces the room. Little interventions were, however, carried out in the sleeping area, where the original planimetric layout was confirmed and dignity restored to the corridor which, in its greater depth, becomes a proper room.
Ultimately, the bathroom block is a hinge between the living area and the sleeping area. The particular configuration of these spaces and their system of paths allows them to be reached autonomously and quickly from any room. The new wall partitions have been realized in plasterboard that, thanks to the use of suspended sanitary ware, completely house the services, avoiding solutions of continuity inside the floors, improving the accessibility and maintainability of the pipes. The remaining services, instead and for the same reason, have been housed inside the new plasterboard ceiling and reach the different rooms of the house through the vertical partitions. Finally, an architectural approach characterizes the distribution of air conditioning which, with its ceiling blades, underlines the depth of the rooms it feeds. The materials used reiterate the distributive logic that informs the apartment. A conservative attitude characterizes the living and the sleeping areas where the existing wooden floors have been confirmed and restored. Stone materials, on the other hand, characterize the service block which, in the different finishes, once again reveals its role as a hinge between the rooms of the house.
